Have your grandparents or even parents, ever shared how they had to walk to school "uphill, for 5 kilometres, barefoot in the snow, etc?" Living in the city last year, there was no choice, we drove Stefan out of our catchment area for French Immersion to a school in St. Boniface. We enjoyed walking Stefan to school, here in Niverville, the months of September and October. It's only about 6 blocks and takes about 10 minutes to walk.
Then snow fell and the cold weather came upon us. The children here are very hardy, walking in any weather. It took us a while to get Stefan ok with the idea of walking on his own and exerting the energy. Today, January 12 Stefan walked on his own. We made a deal, he would walk if it was -25 or warmer with no wind chill. Someday, I am sure, he will tell his children how he too had to walk "uphill, for 5 kilometres.....!!"
